Return To Nowhere

Hi kids,

Well after 10-long months on the trail (6 on the bike), I’ve returned to the good ole US of A. As a matter of fact, I’m enjoying a glass of Utah mountain spring water as I write, pulled directly from the tap. It still feels strange not using a filter. Clean water was by far the most difficult commodity to come by for the last year. Oh, and I’ve been living off of B&D Burgers for the last few weeks with no reservations. It’s very good to be back. I was able to spend some q-time with my little brother before he headed back to Colorado, and the Mom seems to be breathing somewhat easier. Poor girl, she’ll never learn. Pops is the same as always, calm as a clam.

The last several months were a blur. I headed down to Oaxaca, through the Sierra Madre mountains of Chiapas then up to Plenque and over to Chetumal. Crossed the border into Belize, befriended a couple crack addicted gang bangers on the run from the law, spent some time with monkeys in the jungle near Tikal in Guatemala. Was robbed in southern Belieze by some crazed knife wielding teenager - he got about $100US and my camera. Attempted to cross over to Honduras, but was convinced by the locals that my life would be in serious danger on the road to Copan. Livingston just wasn’t an option because navigating Guatemala City is a death wish. Mainly, I was burnt-out, sick of mosquitoes, camping, mediocre food and I had burned through the money I had allocated for the trip. So, I decided to turn around and head back up through Belize and into the Yucatan before heading home. I ended up in Merida to close out the trip with Cuban dancers and cenotes!

I’ll work on posting new pictures now that I have access to a decent connection. Anyway, there are many stories to tell, and someday they will be told, but for now I think I’ll save them for when I see you again.

I would like to thank all those who kept the wishing well clad in copper. Here’s hoping you find a minute to explore this strange world we occupy before you croak.

I now find myself in the unenviable position of finding a job in these glorious economic times. I’m thinking bike mechanic or train operator.

Take care,

Q
